The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of International Cooperation (MoIC) signed today a five-year extension of the Egypt Network for Integrated Development (ENID) project which promotes sustainable development and generates thousands of jobs for people in Upper Egypt.
The new phase of the ENID project will focus on consolidating its achievement in Qena and further promoting the integrated approach and lessons learned to neighbouring governorates including Sohag and Luxor. The project plans to directly and indirectly benefit over 15,000 people with new economic opportunities and enhanced skills in areas of basic services, small businesses and agriculture promotion. With the extension of the project, ENID will also focus on sustaining and scaling up the impact to reach other communities in Upper Egypt and beyond.
Minister Sahr Nasr highlighted the role of the project saying "ENID is a very important project creating jobs and supporting lagging communities especially with a focus on women and youth."
UNDP Resident Representative El-Mostafa Benlamlih also confirmed that "Innovation has been central to ENID, where it has promoted new approaches for inclusive and sustainable human development in Upper Egypt."
ENID project was launched in 2012 and since its launch, ENID has made substantial progress in promoting an integrated development approach and building enabling environments for sustainable human development in Upper Egypt, where there is a high incidence of unemployment and poverty. The project has directly benefited over 4,400 people in various manufacturing, agriculture and skills development based on the needs of the local communities. Furthermore, the project has contributed to linking the field-level best practices to local and national policies through its policy work and advocacy.
The current phase of the project was supported by the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development, the Government of Italy, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and UK Department for International Development (DFID), UN Women, the Government of Sweden (Sida), the Coca-Cola Foundation and UNDP. The project extension also includes joining of a new donor the Big Heart Foundation of UAE, which has committed to contribute $1.3 million for the promotion of health and literacy education project especially targeting women in Upper Egypt through the ENID project.
The project extension was signed by H.E. Dr. Sahar Nasr Minister of International Cooperation, UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Mostafa Benlamlih, and H.E. Ambassador Saïd Hindam, Assistant Foreign Minister of International Cooperation for Development. The signing ceremony was witnessed by donor partners, government officials and UNDP representatives as well as the Project Director Dr. Heba Handoussa and ENID team.
