Over 100 teachers from technical schools in Luxor, Egypt, participated in a two-week-long entrepreneurship education workshop, organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Ministry of Education.
The training is part of a Japan-funded Entrepreneurship Curriculum Programme (ECP), which will promote and nurture a culture of entrepreneurship among students in secondary technical schools, and prepare them to become productive members of society, creating value and opportunities for themselves, as well as for their communities.
During the workshop, the teachers acquired both theoretical and practical knowledge about entrepreneurship education, as well as jointly developed competences, learning outcomes, assessment tools, and syllabus for entrepreneurship classes.
This was the first step towards launching an ECP in Luxor and upscaling it to other governorates in Upper Egypt.  The first ECP in Egypt was successfully implemented in the city of Qena during the school year 2014/2015, when over 100 teachers and 2,000 students received entrepreneurship training. Over the years, UNIDO has supported more than 10 countries in developing entrepreneurial culture and skills, as well as enhancing youth's technical and learning capability through the ECP.
“We learned so much in the workshop. Our goal now is to transfer the knowledge to our students so that they can start their own businesses, through which they can create opportunities for themselves as entrepreneurs,” said Amal Ahmed, an assistant teacher in Hotel and Tourism Studies in Luxor.
Mohamed Soliman, the head of the ECP at the Ministry of Education, said: “I believe the teachers will lead the implementation of the entrepreneurship curriculum programme in their schools, and instill in the students the spirit of entrepreneurship, which will empower them and support their professional and personal growth.”
“The Ministry of Education shares the same vision with UNIDO. This programme marks the continued collaboration between UNIDO and the Ministry in our joint effort to support and foster entrepreneurship in Upper Egypt,” he added.
