LI Yong, Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), has travelled to Morocco and met with the Head of Government, Saad-Eddine El Othmani, with the aim of advancing the country's inclusive and sustainable industrial development and strengthening its collaboration and strategic partnership with UNIDO.
Director General Li attended a round table discussion on UNIDO-Morocco partnership perspectives chaired by the Ministry of Industry, Investment, Trade and Digital Economy, during which Morocco’s industrial acceleration plan was discussed. The DG also held meetings with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and of Economy and Finance. “I would like to commend Morocco for its clear vision of industrial development and underscore the great potential of the country to become a manufacturing hub,” said DG Li.
In the course of the last years, UNIDO's technical cooperation with Morocco has focused on improving national quality infrastructure – including skills development and vocational training in the heavy construction sector – and food value chain development and environmental protection.
“The Government of Morocco acknowledges the leading role that industrialization can play in further advancing the inclusive and sustainable development of our country and looks for increased cooperation with UNIDO in the area of sustainable industrial development,” said Saad-Eddine El Othmani.
The key role of partnerships in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and ways of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals were among topics discussed by DG Li in his meetings. Li, who is on a two-day official visit to Morocco, recognized the Government's continued support for UNIDO's activities and commended the country's recent progress in inclusive and sustainable industrial development.
