Mr. Mohamed Shehab Abdel Wahab, Director of the EEAA, H.E. Ambassador Hany Selim, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, Director of the Department for International Cooperation forDevelopment and Ms. Randa Aboul-Hosn, UNDP Egypt Country Director, signed the project documents.
On 23 January 2018, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) announced thesignature of two new environment projects worth EGP 71 million, funded by the Montreal Protocol.
The new projects will provide support to the Ministry of Environment and EEAA through two projects: “Phase-out of the use of HCFC-141b in NON-DRM Polyurethane Foam Applications” and “Demonstration of Low CostOptions for the Conversion to non-Ozone Depleting Substances Technologies in Polyurethane Foams at Very Small Users”.
The first project tackles the foam production enterprises, helping to reduce hydro-chloro-Fluorocarbon (HCFC) gases used in manufacturing processes. The second project will help local manufacturers convert theirproduction processes to non-Ozone Depleting Substances Technologies, in line with international good practices. Both projects address Egypt’s obligations to the Montreal Protocol, which will help Egypt reduce theindustry’s contribution to global warming.
The three parties represented by Mr. Mohamed Shehab Abdel Wahab, Director of the EEAA, H.E. Ambassador Hany Selim, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, Director of the Department for International Cooperation forDevelopment and Ms. Randa Aboul-Hosn, UNDP Egypt Country Director, signed the project documents. H.E. Dr. Khaled Fahmy, Minister of Environment and Mr. Richard Dictus, United Nations Resident Coordinator andUNDP Resident Representative witnessed the signature.
During the ceremony, Ms. Randa Aboul-Hosn shared her views on the role of the environment projects and their contribution to the development agenda in Egypt: “We have a global commitment to protect our planet. We willbe working closely with the government of Egypt to adopt climate-friendly applications, to be in line with the global trend of green economy. The new technologies will preserve the Ozone layer and will open opportunities towork with the private sector in the Foam sector”.
The projects, starting soon, will be implemented with the Ministry of Environment and the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency.
