During his weekly program ‘The World to Where?’ on RT Abu-Ghazaleh: Two Threats Face Humankind; an Out of Control AI and Machine Supremacy over Human Mind

02-Dec-2020

AMMAN – Well-known Arab economist, Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, founder and chairman of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Global (TAG.Global), shed light on the existential Artificial Intelligence (AI) risks that might threaten mankind, saying that either Machines would go out of control of their creators, or they surpass human mind.

In a new episode of the “World to Where?” weekly program on Russia Today (RT) Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh stated that: ‘The world has entered the Fourth Industrial Revolution which impacted all  aspects of our life including us the human beings. He added   that the Revolution will change our lives and will also make us live longer, although on the other hand it has an ugly facet.

“Today, the world is embracing an inclusive digital transformation, yet, we would be facing a real challenge; machine intelligence that we create will surpass human intelligence one day, where the machine would become more ambitious to rule the world,” Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh said.

Dr. Abu Ghazaleh referred to statements made by  two business magnates, the American businessman and entrepreneur  Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX and the CEO of the  electric car Tesla; and the  Chinese businessman  Jack Ma, the co-founder of Alibaba Group; the multinational technology company specialized in e-commerce, as they both pointed out that ‘Machines could overtake and surpass humans in many ways.

Therefore, Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh called for establishing a control and monitoring department to reduce  Artificial Intelligence risks, urging similar monitoring of social media platforms, saying : "Digital Revolution has no restraints at all, which is so scary and no one has even proposed to establish an international governing body to control this Revolution."

Meanwhile, Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh underlined two key concerns: Machines would be out of control of their own makers and the World in light of the Industrial Revolution would be divided into two categories; the high-tech category and the technologically retarded category, which failed to utilize technology benefits.

During the program, Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh referred to his newly released book entitled “The Inevitable Digital Future: A World of Smart Cities” which he prepared in light of the role of technology in the field of sustainable urbanization, noting that the book will be available for free distribution shortly.

In the book, Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh talks about different types of technology which he believes is the cornerstone for the establishment of Smart Cities, and the lessons learnt from failed smart city initiatives; in addition to a blueprint that can be used to develop comprehensive smart cities of the future.
